Mitral Valve Clip

A mitral valve clip is a minimally invasive procedure used to repair a damaged mitral valve. It is a small metal clip which is attached to the abnormal part of the valve closing it tightly while allowing the rest of the valve to open and close normally.

What is a mitral valve clip procedure?

The mitral valve is the valve between the two left chambers of your heart.

Mitral regurgitation is when this valve doesn’t close tightly enough, allowing blood to flow back into the upper chamber and toward the lungs. This can sometimes make you feel short of breath, tired, light headed, and may cause swelling in your feet and legs. If left untreated, mitral regurgitation can lead to arrhythmias and heart failure.

The mitral valve clip is delivered to your heart through a thin tube (catheter) inserted in a vein in your groin. Using advanced imaging, your cardiologist guides the clip to the mitral valve and attaches it to bring the valve leaflets together, reducing the leak.

Why you might a mitral valve clip

This procedure is an alternative for patients who are not suitable candidates for open-heart surgery.
  • Moderate to severe mitral regurgitation causing symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, or swelling.
  • A high surgical risk due to age, frailty, or other medical conditions.
  • Not responded well to medication alone.

Dr Jason Sharp and Dr Dennis Wang each have extensive experience in the treatment of mitral regurgitation and performing mitral valve clip implantation. They are actively involved in training other cardiologists to perform this procedure both nationally and internationally.
