Electrocardiography (ECG)

An electrocardiogram (ECG) is a medical test that detects cardiac abnormalities by measuring the electrical activity generated by the heart as it contracts. The machine that records the patient's ECG is called an electrocardiograph.

What should I expect?

An ECG is a starting point as part of your cardiology consultation and is also used as important monitoring tool for many cardiac conditions.

The test requires access to your chest area and electrodes will be placed on your chest. There is no discomfort involved in this non-invasive test.

It is recommended to wear two-piece attire.

Duration: 5-10 minutes

Results

The results will usually be discussed with you following the test and a report will be sent to your referring doctor. If your ECG is performed as part of a routine cardiology appointment, your cardiologist will provide the results on the same day to you.
