Blood Pressure Monitor

Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) is when your blood pressure is being measured as you move around, living your normal daily life. It is normally carried over a 24 hour period.

What should I expect?

By measuring your blood pressure at regular intervals over a 24 hour period, your cardiologist is able to get a clear picture of how your blood pressure fluctuates throughout the day and night. The major advantage of monitoring over single clinic pressures is its ability to detect 'white coat' and labile hypertension.

The blood pressure monitor uses a small blood pressure machine that is attached to a belt around your body and is connected via a tube to a cuff wrapped around your upper arm. It is small enough not to obstruct normal daily life and you can even sleep with it on.

Preparation

There are two appointments when booking in for the ABPM. One to have the monitor fitted and the second one to have it removed 24 hours later. It is important to bring back the monitor at the arranged time.

You cannot shower whilst wearing the monitor, so have a shower or bath before your appointment.

Wear a loose fitting top to allow for an easy fitting session as the monitor will be worn under your clothing.
