Transoesophageal Echocardiogram (TOE)

A Holter monitor is a simple non-invasive test that continuously records your heart rhythm. The monitor is worn for 24 to 48 hours during normal activity.

Preparation

There are two appointments when booking in for the Holter monitor. One to have the monitor fitted and the second one to have it removed 24 hours later. It is important to bring back the Holter monitor at the arranged time.

You cannot shower whilst wearing the monitor, so have a shower or bath before your appointment.

Wear a loose fitting top to allow for an easy fitting session as the monitor will be worn under your clothing.

What should I expect?

Electrodes are stuck onto your chest. These are attached by wires to a small recording monitor. You carry the Holter monitor in a pocket or pouch worn around your neck. The monitor runs on batteries. While you wear the monitor, it records your heart's electrical activity.

You will be asked to keep a diary of what activities you do while wearing the monitor, and how you feel. This will include any symptoms you experience. It is very important that you accurately record your symptoms and activities so the cardiologist can match them with your Holter monitor findings.

Please allow approximately 15 minutes to have the Holter monitor fitted by our registered nurse.

Results

After the holter monitor is returned along with your symptom diary, it will be carefully analysed and a full report will be sent to your referring doctor. If any significant abnormalities are detected, we will facilitate prompt treatment by contacting your referring doctor on the same day.
