Transcather Aortic Valve Implantation

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI) is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat severe aortic stenosis. A new aortic valve is implanted without removing the diseased valve via the femoral artery.

What is a TAVI

Aortic stenosis is the abnormal narrowing of the aortic valve, one of the four valves in the heat that ensures blood flows in the right direction. This narrowing reduces the flow of blood from your heart to the remainder of your body. Traditional treatment involves open heart surgery to repair or replace the damaged valve.

TAVI now offers effective treatment to patients who are at high risk for conventional open heart surgery. It is also intended to prevent further damage to the heart from aortic stenosis and to prolong life, which medical therapy cannot do.

Determining Suitability for a TAVI

Following discussion with your cardiologist you will undertake a TAVI workup. This is a series of medical tests to ensure that at TAVI will be a safe procedure for you and that you will be likely to benefit from the procedure. These tests may include:
  • an echocardiogram
  • a CT of the aorta, commonly called a CT TAVI, to assess optimum valve size and placement
  • A coronary angiogram to assess the coronary arteries and determine if there is a need for stenting prior to TAVI.

Dr Jason Sharp and Dr Dennis Wang each have extensive experience in the treatment of aortic stenosis and performing Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation. They are actively involved in training other cardiologists both nationally and internationally.

Our dedicated TAVI team are experts at providing a comprehensive and personalised approach to each patient's care, giving you the confidence that you are in the best hands.
